By now, the science behind thermodynamics is well understood. At its most basic, thermodynamics is the study of how work and heat interplay in a system. Thermodynamics: A Brief History
As a science, thermodynamics has arguably been studied since about 1650. It first application was in the development of a vacuum pump. It has been codified since that time. Over the years, several key principles have been devised and later inducted into scientific law. These thermodynamic laws each began as a hypothesis and survived rigorous theoretical and experimental testing until scientists were unable to disprove them. In most basic physics courses, the simplest case of thermodynamics is known as the black body case. It poses a theoretical machine whose inner workings are unknown and unimportant. These quantities are known as heat and work or heat and energy. Heat can be supplied to a system and energy is produced, or energy is supplied to a system and heat is produced. How does this work?
